The Forum recognises that language is important and powerful, and words have various meanings for different people. Every individual may use different words to describe themselves, their experiences, and the lifelong impacts of those experiences.
The Forum acknowledges that the sensitive and appropriate use of language when describing child sexual abuse in schools is important in supporting people to heal. Language and words can be used to recognise, validate, and empower people. If used carelessly, they can stigmatise, diminish, blame or cause and contribute to trauma.
In line with a trauma-informed approach, the Forum acknowledges that individuals have the right to define their identity and experiences. The Forum welcomes feedback about the language we choose to use from people who have experienced child sexual abuse in schools so that we can consider and adapt our language over time wherever possible.
The Forum sincerely aims to ensure our words, engagement and actions support people on their healing journey and cause no harm.
